Overall, this movie was a roller-coaster of awesome action, with amazing cinematography and a mostly-diverse cast. The plot follows Major as she works for a subset of the government, in a technologically-driven society that encourages the enhancement of humans. Technically, Major's brain was salvaged and placed into a mechanical body, so she functions in both worlds. However, she comes to doubt what she is being told about her past, and is thus set upon the path to discover her true past and unravel the conspiracy surrounding her creation.
Major is a strong character, and her team members are just as strong and capable. They all support her, even after things go terribly wrong. This dynamic is starting to make a real trend in movies, and I'm loving it.
I wasn't sure what to expect of this movie. I have a small background in anime, but I'd never seen Ghost in the Shell before. I really enjoyed the movie, and I thought that there were plenty of good points. I still don't understand why they cast Scarlett Johannson as Major. Well, I get that they wanted to "show the change," but I still wish we'd seen an Asian actress playing the part. They could have done a lot of things differently, I'm sure, and I hope they don't continue to white-wash in future movies.
I'd recommend this movie to those who aren't really familiar with the anime, because I think that the movie may have been very different from what you would expect if you had watched the anime beforehand, but I do hope that you could still enjoy it.
