Warning: Very minor spoilers ahead.
I was told to go into this particular movie with no expectations for what I would see, so I did, only hoping that Harley Quinn would be an amazing character.
I was rewarded for my efforts, and I came out of the theater with a new appreciation for Margot Robbie and Will Smith. They were the foundation of this movie, and the truly redeeming qualities that outshined Jared Leto's laughable Joker and an otherwise "only OK" movie.
Harley Quinn and Deadshot are excellent characters. Robbie's Harley is a great translation of her character to the movie screen--she plays Harley as the insane, Joker-loving, bad-ass woman she is in the comics. I know some reviews have dissed Robbie's performance, saying that she ruins the good name of the independent woman, but Harley Quinn isn't like that. She's chaotic neutral--the only person she cares about is the Joker, and her ultimate goal is to be reunited with him.
Early on there is a clear purpose for Harley and Deadshot. It's the engaging storyline that DC needed to compete with Marvel. Early on, Deadshot is given humanizing characteristics, and he uses these to connect with the rest of the Suicide Squad. Deadshot's sympathy is my favorite part of this movie. It brings Harley Quinn into the fold as well as the rest of the team, and gives an explanation for their actions in the last fourth of the movie.
Honorary mention to El Diablo--he's one hard ass son of a bitch. I admire his resolve.
All in all, I give Suicide Squad a 3.7/5. There was clearly a lack of effort put into editing this movie, and a three year old must have gotten to the footage and deleted whatever key scenes were needed to explain Katana's backstory as well as explain how Amanda Waller became such a hardass.
Enjoy, if you can! Go in with no expectations (hard to do if you've read this), and you'll turn out fine. Let me know what you thought of it!
